The Atlanta Hawks have traded guard Trae Young to the Washington Wizards for CJ Mccollum and Corey Kispert.
ATLANTA, GA- The Atlanta Hawks have traded Point Guard Trae Young to the Washington Wizards. The trade is seen as a win for both teams The Hawks have netted two new players to their rooster with the trade that occurred during the Atlanta-New Orleans game on Wednesday. The trade comes after Young has suffered several injuries in the current season.
The 27-year-old Young has been an instrumental element to the Hawks across his seven and a half seasons. After being drafted as the fifth overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks, where he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks the same day. Across his career at the Hawks, Young racked up several accomplishments and recognitions including leading the Hawks to the NBA playoffs in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons.
During the October 29, 2025, game against the Brooklyn Nets, Young suffered a a sprained right Medical Collateral Ligament and was out for 22-games. He returned to only suffer another injury on December 19, 2025, just one day after returning from the October injury. Young again suffered a right quad contusion in late December, which kept the Hawks guard from playing in January games leading up to his trade to the Wizards.
In the trade, Atlanta will lose Young and will receive Guard CJ McCollum and Forward Corey Kispert. McCollum was traded to the Wizards last summer from the New Orleans Pelicans. During the current season McCollum started 35 games with the Wizards. During the current season he has average 18.8 ppg. It has not been made clear if McCollum will start with the Hawks this season.
The Hawks also acquired Forward Corey Kispert in the trade for Young. Kispert has played four seasons with Washington and averaged 9.2 ppg this season with 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists. He has averaged around 19.5 minutes of playing time this season in games.
The Hawks are back in action on Friday night as they travel to Denver to take on the Nuggets. The Hawks are 19-21 this season with a record of 11-10 on the road as they head into Denver for Friday’s matchup.
